BARCELONA ace Lionel Messi has confirmed that the first team players have agreed to earn reduced wages to ensure that the clubs non-sport staff can continue to earn their full pay.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner made the statement on his official Instagram account explaining the situation the club is in.
La Liga action has been suspended since the start of March due to the Coronavirus pandemic which has caused leagues across Europe to do the same.
The statement from the Argentinian international included: “The time has come to announce that, apart from the reduction of 70 per cent of our salary during the state of alarm, we are going to make contributions as well so that club employees can collect 100 per cent of their salary for the duration of this situation.”
Barcelona are topping the La Liga table as things stand, and their squad is packed of talented individuals, leading many asking the question as to how much money they will still be earning.
Star man Lionel Messi who is on a contract which sees him bring in 500k a week will now be earning 150k.
Former Liverpool talisman Luis Suarez is reported to now be bringing in 87k instead of his contracted 290k per-week.
Current Barcelona and Spanish international Gerrard Pique will see his usual 165k weekly wage cut to 49.5k as a result of the virus.

The statement from Messi also revealed that despite the speculation around the matter, the Barcelona players have never opposed a wage cut.
“First of all we want to clarify that our will has always been to apply a decrease in the salary we receive, because we fully understand that this is an exceptional situation and we are the first ones who have always helped the club when asked.”
