THE latest instalment in Legendary Pictures’ ‘MonsterVerse’ franchise has been released. Kong: Skull Island smashed its way into Southampton cinemas on March 9th.
The film has received generally positive reviews from critics and since earned over $392 million worldwide, against its $185 million budget.
The story concerns a team of scientists who explore an uncharted landmass in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong, and must fight to escape from the island’s deadly creatures.
Kong: Skull Island is also set to be followed by the next Godzilla sequel, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”, where classic beasts such as Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan are set to feature as well. This will provide the lead up to Kong facing up to Godzilla for another film in 2020.
A post-credits scene from Kong: Skull Island further teased the monster brawls, much to the delight of the fans brave enough to sit through the credits.
Movie-goer and sci-fi fan Hana Crowther commented: “My friend persuaded me to watch the scene at the end, and it was quite exciting for them to tie Godzilla in with King Kong.”
This is not the only time that Kong has had to go up against the radioactive dinosaur.
Toho Pictures and Universal in 1962 rallied the giant monsters together. Produced as part of Toho’s 30th anniversary celebration, the film remains one of the most attended of all the Godzilla films to date.
However, the current incarnation of Kong is only around 30 metres tall, and is therefore miniscule compared to Godzilla, who towers over the skyline at around 108 metres.
The setup is believed to be disadvantageous for the giant gorilla, yet fans are excited to see what Legendary Pictures have up their sleeves for when it comes to the final showdown.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released on 22nd March 2019, starring Vera Farmiga and Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown.
